NT 3.51
Date Originated:
July 24, 1996
Product(s) Affected:
Any Compaq Unit with LS-120 Diskette
Drive
Symptom(s):
While installing Windows NT 3.51 from 1.44 MB
floppies in an LS-120 drive, the error "INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE" is
displayed after the second disk is inserted and accessed.
Suggestion(s):
Read the Windows NT 3.51 diskette install
only procedure in the README.TXT file.
Technical Tip(s):
You can order the LS-120 Driver
Diskette through either the Compaq Order Center (1-800-952-7689) or an
authorized Compaq Repair Facility in your area.
Windows NT currently does not have the proper drivers to access the 120
MB floppy drive.
The readme.txt file contains the following information for NT floppy
installation:
==================================================
Installing Windows NT 3.51 (Diskette install only)
To install Windows NT 3.51 on a system that has an LS-120 floppy drive
as the only floppy drive, do the following:
- Boot the machine to DOS and copy the Compaq LS-120 Software Support
diskette to your hard drive into a temporary directory (i.e. xcopy
a:\*.* c:\120 /s).
- Make a backup copy of your Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.51
Boot Disk 1.
- Place the copy of your Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.51 Boot
Disk 1 into the floppy drive (i.e. a:). Make an i386 directory on this
floppy disk (i.e. md a:\i386). Copy the following files from the
temporary directory created in step 1 to the specified target
directories on the Microsoft Windows NT Workstation Boot Disk 1:
- copy c:\120\winnt\ntdetect.com a:\ntdetect.com
- copy c:\120\winnt\txtsetup.sif a:\txtsetup.sif
- copy c:\120\winnt\atapidkt.sys a:\atapidkt.sys
- copy c:\120\winnt\scsiflop.sys a:\scsiflop.sys
- copy c:\120\winnt\atapidkt.sys a:\i386\atapidkt.sys
- copy c:\120\winnt\scsiflop.sys a:\i386\scsiflop.sys
- copy c:\120\winnt\ntdetect.com a:\i386\ntdetect.com
- Boot the Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.51 Boot Disk 1. Press
the F6 key when the "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware
configuration..." message appears on your screen. (This is before the
blue Welcome screen.)
- When you are asked if you want to specify a storage device, press S
to specify and choose the "LS-120 MB Drive" option from the list.
- Follow the rest of the installation procedures as outlined in the
documentation that comes with Microsoft Windows NT 3.51.
- When the installation is complete and Microsoft Windows NT is
running on your system, open a DOS box and change directory to the
temporary directory you made in step 1 (i.e. cd 120).
- Run CPQINST from this directory (i.e. type CPQINST at the DOS
prompt). The software will be installed.
- Shutdown and power off your computer. When you restart, you will be
ble to access the LS-120 Drive normally.
