Most common problems -------------------- 1. Communication problems, Can't find any scanner If you have trouble communicating with the scanner and are using an Adaptec card, you can use the Adaptec SCSI Interagator in EZ SCSI group file for troubleshooting. Run Adaptec's SCSI Interrigator which will help you search and troubleshoot your system. If Showscsi cannot find any interface card or scanner, then your software and interface card are not properly installed. You need to review your installation and make sure there are no conflicts. 2. OmniPage Pro 7.0 causes an application error when launched Please refer to the Omnipage icon in Microtek ScanWizard group file for instructions on how to install the patch. 3. When scanning with OmniPage Pro 7.0, you get an error -1003 This problem usually happens when you have selected the wrong scanner model when installing OmniPage Pro. Reinstall OmniPage Pro and choose Twain Scanner as your scanner model. You may also need to install a patch file for your Omnipage Pro. Please refer to the OmniPage icon in the Microtek ScanWizard group file for instructions on how to install the patch. 4. Using an Adaptec 2940, 3940, 2920 interface card When using an Adaptec 78xx series card such as one of the models above, make sure you have Sync. Negotiation disabled for SCSI ID 6 (or whatever SCSI ID you set your scanner to). Also, Disable the Disconnect option and set the Maximum Transfer rate to the lowest number of megabytes per second possible (for example, set it to 10 MB for 2940UW). In addition, you may need to obtain the latest drivers for your interface card. You need to have version 1.30 or later of the interface card drivers. 5. Scans and prescans are very slow Change the Image Quality option to draft for faster scans. This option can be accessed by clicking on the red toolbox on the bottom right side of the settings screen of ScanWizard. Also change the preview setup and turn the fast prescan option on. 6. Dshell error This error usually comes up when you do not have an AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file. If you do not have one, create a blank file for each file on root of your drive C: and try installing ScanWizard again. If the problem persists, start Windows in Safe mode (restart the computer and press F8 when you see the message "Starting Windows 95 ...", then select Safe mode from the menu) and then install the software again. 7. "Can't communicate with scanner, error -1004" This could be related to any number of problems. a) Scanner is not ready or is defective. Make sure your scanner lamp comes on solid and you have a steady green light when you turn the scanner on. Note: Allow 60 seconds between each time you turn the scanner off. b) Defective cable. If you have another SCSI cable try it. c) Interface card is not in the slot all the way. d) There is a interrupt (IRQ) or I/O (port address) conflict between the scanner card and some other device. Some newer computers may use all available interrupt numbers or the BIOS may be setup to use all available interrupts for plug and play cards. The 1502E card provided with the scanner can use interrupt 9, 10 (default), 11 and 12. You can try changing the jumper for the interrupt. Set it to other numbers besides 10 and try installing the software again to see if that works. Every time you change the I/O port or the interrupt number, you need to reinstall the EZ-SCSI software (if using Windows 3.1X) or change the interrupt level in the device manager icon (if using Windows 95). It is also a good test to see if EZ-SCSI can see your card and can identify the scanner when you install it (if using Windows 3.1X). This will tell you that your scanner card is working properly. If using Windows 95, do not install the EZ-SCSI software and refer to the Win 95 icon in ScanWizard for installation tips. 8. Microtek ScanWizard option does not show up under the Photoshop Acquire, Select Source option. You need to install Photoshop again making sure that you have selected the plugins options. 9. "Can't comunicate with scanner -6" error when you try to scan or prescan This error could happen if you are using a third-party SCSI card other than the one bundled with the Microtek scanner. If you are using a SCSI card with an older chip (firmware or ROM) dated a few years back, your card may not properly work with some of the newer ASPI devices, such as scanners. For example, the Adaptec 1520 with a ROM dated 1990 will not work unless you install a new ROM on the card or use the card that came with your scanner. 10. Data corruption and lock up If you experience problems with the scanning software locking up or crashing in the middle of a scan, delete all files in C:\Windows\Twain\Scanwiz\Data as well as all files in C:\Windows\Twain_32\Scanwiz directory and reinstall the program. One or more files may be corrupt. Reinstalling alone will not solve this problem since the setup program always checks for previous copies of all files before attempting to copy new files. You must delete all files before reinstalling! Also, delete the file mscandc.ini from c:\windows\twain\scanwiz as well as from c:\windows\twain_32\scanwiz directories. 11. ScanWizard does not see the ASPI interface card. Instead, it will see a ESDI_506 SCSI controller card and it can't communicate with the scanner This is a known bug in the Adaptec driver software. If you have a CD ROM in your computer, it sometimes is seen as a SCSI card. You can just ignore this option. Using the Probe or SCSI Chain information select the correct SCSI Adapter card you have (it could be Sparrow, 1502 or AIC 6230/6360). If there is no other option that shows up, you may have not configured your SCSI card properly or you have a bad cable. If you have Windows 3.1x, make sure that EZ-SCSI sees your card and scanner during installation. When you first boot your computer, you will see a message that the ASPI2DOS.SYS was installed successfully. If you have Windows 95 make sure your card shows up under the Device Manager option of System icon in Control Panel and that it does not have a yellow exclamation mark next to it. If there is a yellow mark next to it, it is conflicting with another device and you need to change its settings (resources). 12. "Can't communicate with scanner (1)" Users of Microtek ScanMaker II/IIXE scanners need to have firmware chip version 5.07 or above to use this version of the software. If the chip inside the scanner is a lower version, this error message comes up. 13. "Can't communicate with scanner (-207)" This error happens when you use a Microtek ScanMaker IISP with a document feeder or transparency adapter and if the external power source for the document feeder or the transparency adapter is not connected to the scanner or is faulty. 14. "Can't communicate with scanner (0)" You need to install a terminator on your scanner. Your scanner may not have a solid green ready light. 15. OmniPage Professional V 6.0 If you are installing an upgrade to your existing Caere product, modify the Scanmgr.ini in OmniPage directory by adding the following section to it. Or, simply copy the SCANMGR.INI file from Microtek ScanWizard disk 2 to the OmniPage directory overwritting the existing file in that directory. If using OmniPage Professional 6.0, this file resides in the C:\WINDOWS\CAERE directory. [Microtek ScanWizard] COMMENT=ScanMakerIIg/ScanMakerIIsp,01011, OK SHOW_UI=0 INVERT=1 LA_INVERT=0 THRESHOLD=1 AUTO_BRI=1 DISPLAY_PROGRESS=0 You can use Windows NOTEPAD.EXE by choosing Run from the File pull-down menu in Program Manager and typing in C:\WINDOWS\CAERE\SCANMGR.INI in the box and clicking OK. If your OmniPage program on another drive or in another directory, you need to type the correct drive name and directory path in the above statement. Select File, then Save to save the changes. 16. Image quality is not good when using a VGA or SVGA display card This is a problem you will run into if you are using a VGA card and have Microsoft Windows set for VGA. When Microsoft Windows is set for VGA, the greatest number of colors you have is 16. When displaying a color image using only 16 colors, the image becomes dithered and does not look good on the screen. To avoid this problem, run setup from Windows directory. Change the display type from VGA to your video card recommended type of display with 256 or higher colors. Please refer to your video card manual for more information on this subject. Note: Even with 256 colors, you will see some dithering in the image. Only by using a 32,000, 64,000, or true 24-bit 16.7 million color card, will there be no dithering in the image. The data captured by the scanner is always there but the display card cannot display it.
